The United South Africa Movement (TUSAM) proudly marks the second anniversary of the Tandem People’s Charter of Resolutions and the Charter of Citizens’ Obligations.
These Charters embody TUSAM’s vision for South Africa and all who call it home: a proud, secure and healthy democracy, firmly set on the path toward a better life for all. Achieving this vision is not the responsibility of government alone — it requires the active commitment of every South African.
The Charters call for clean governance, a capable and ethical state, an inclusive and growing economy, and the advancement of social cohesion and justice. At the same time, they affirm that democracy demands something of its citizens: to place the nation first, uphold the principles of equality and equity, participate meaningfully in elections, and advance the common good above narrow or vested interests.
Two years after their launch, the values enshrined in these Charters are more relevant than ever. South Africa stands at a crossroads. The choice before us is clear: to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and equality, and to build the country we envision — or to allow apathy and disengagement to shape our future, leaving decisions solely in the hands of political actors while civil society stands aside.
With municipal elections less than a year away, this is a defining moment for active citizenship. As our Charter reminds us, democracy is not self-sustaining. It flourishes only when ordinary people nurture it, defend its principles, and hold both themselves and their leaders accountable.
In this spirit, we renew our invitation to all conscientious South Africans to stand together in building a socially, economically and politically inclusive nation — a future that we must shape collectively and steward responsibly.
