TUSAM

Today, The United South Africa Movement (TUSAM) proudly marks the first anniversary of the launch of its People’s Charter of Resolutions and Citizens’ Obligations, a transformative blueprint for its civic engagement and national renewal. This milestone represents a year of collective action, unwavering commitment, and hope for a better South Africa.

The People’s Charter, unveiled on this day in 2024, was born out of a shared vision for a united, just, and prosperous nation. It reflects the voices and aspirations of citizens from all walks of life who came together to demand accountability, ethical governance, and meaningful change.

Over the past year, this charter has served as a guiding light for TUSAM’s mission to empower citizens and hold political leaders accountable.

Key Achievements Over the Past Year:

  • Strengthen Civic Engagement: TUSAM has mobilised communities across South Africa to actively participate in shaping their future through dialogue, advocacy, and grassroots initiatives.
  • Advocacy for Accountability: Through the principles outlined in the charter, TUSAM has sought to champion transparency and accountability in governance, urging political parties to align with citizens’ demands for ethical leadership.
  • Building Unity: The movement has fostered collaboration amongst diverse groups, starting with those aligned through the umbrella Convergence for South Africa (C4SA) emphasizing that South Africa’s strengthen lies in its unity.

As we commemorate this anniversary, TUSAM reaffirms its commitment to the principles enshrined in the People’s Charters. These include upholding human rights, promoting equality, ensuring economic justice, and fostering a culture of active citizenship. Given the ongoing global developments following the advent of a new Trump administration in the USA, as well as the punitive actions it has already taken against South Africa, the journey ahead remains challenging. This is particularly so when we consider the combined impact of the actions of various Afrikaans community groups, concerned by various South African race policies they feel unjustly targeted by, on one hand and, on the other hand, the response by the South African government and many South Africans to them. Building a nation where every citizen’s voice is heard must remain at the core or our drive, despite the odds that seem stacked against us.

As TUSAM, we invite all South Africans to join us in celebrating this milestone of the first anniversary of the People’s Charter and in recommitting to the values that unite us. We also look forward to contributing meaningfully to the announced process of a National Dialogue, for which we have already stated our desire to have greater civil society influence. We believe that it is a process that will lose its purpose if its program content and processes are dominated by the government and politicians.

Let us continue to strive for a future where our shared aspirations become reality.
