TUSAM plans to host the 2023 People’s Summit to facilitate giving back power to
the people to determine what they want. It should no longer be up to politicians to
say: “vote for me/us and we shall do this for you”, but it should be for the people to
say: “we shall vote for you if you do this for us”.
The People’s Summit constitutes the main driver of action during TUSAM’s Phase II. Phase I, which had begun with the formation of TUSAM in January 2021, ended at the end of April 2023, following TUSAM’s formal launch. Phase III will start in the immediate aftermath of the 2024 general elections in South Africa.
The People’s Summit is therefore not just a conference. It is a rallying cry for change, a platform for the people’s convergence in constructive dialogue, and an intended catalyst for progress. At the core of its raison d’être is to begin the process of taking the power, South Africa’s sovereignty, back from politicians and place it in the hands of the people, where it belongs. We have assembled a distinguished group of professionals and leaders from various sectors across our society – a retired judge, top business professionals, university professors, safety and security experts, economists, and representatives from civil society organizations focusing on race relations and whistle-blowers, among many others. The proposed speakers represent the very fabric of our nation. Their collective wisdom and expertise will be instrumental in facilitating a useful process to achieve the summit’s aims.
Resulting from the People’s Summit will be a profound document, the Charter of Resolutions, which will serve as a manifesto from the people, outlining their aspirations and demands for the next and subsequent generations of elected officials. It will be presented to the political parties and independent candidates contesting the 2024 general elections with the expectation that they embrace these resolutions and strive to fulfill them during their tenure if elected. TUSAM will only endorse those parties who sign and ratify a pledge to act in good faith on the Charter of Resolutions.
